You have become the victim of spam. Spam is unsolicited e-mails. Be it an ad to buy something, or an email urging you to do something; if you didn’t ask for it, didn’t sign up on a mailing list related to it, and didn’t leave your e-mail address on a web form asking for more information, it’s spam.
The fact that you bought something online is the clue. Chances are, somewhere on the order form in very small letters, was a legal notice saying that by placing the order you were giving your permission for the company to “share” your personal information with their “associates” or “other companies you might be interested in.” Unless you checked (or unchecked) an equally small box to NOT give your permission, your email address was sold. And probably resold a few more times.
Getting spam to stop is a difficult and time consuming job. Now that your email address is floating around in cyberspace you may never stop all spam. These articles have some good information on how you can cut down on the number of spam emails you get each day and how to protect yourself.

Two pieces of advice: (1) If you see an email in your Inbox from someone you don’t recognize, DO NOT open it. Put a check mark in the box to the left of the email and click the spam button. Opening a spam email could easily let the send know they’ve reached a “live” address. You spam problem will just get bigger. (2) Create a throw-away email address (yahoo.com, ymail.com, rocketmail.com, gmail.com, etc) for online ordering only. If it starts to get spam, you can just ignore it or delete the account and get another address.
