Behind the Mask: Destruction and Creativity in Women’s Aggressio
$5.36
Hearkening to Women's Voices

1. The Puzzle of Aggression

2. Ways of Occupying Space

3. Why Not Hurt Others?

4. The Rage of Disconnection

5. Masking Aggression

6. Creating New Ground

Notes

References

Acknowledgments

Index

This boldly original book explores the origins, meanings, and forms of women's aggression. Drawing from in-depth interviews with sixty women of different ages and ethnic and class backgrounds--police officers, attorneys, substance abusers, homemakers, artists--Dana Jack provides a rich account of how women explain (or explain away) their own hidden or actual acts of hurt to others. With sensitivity but without sentimentality, Jack gives readers a range of compelling stories of how women channel, either positively or destructively, their own powerful force and of how they resist and retaliate in the face of others' aggression in a society that expects women to be yielding, empathetic, and supportive.

Arguing that aggression arises from failures in relationships, Jack portrays the many forms that women's aggression can take, from veiled approaches used to resist, control, and take vengeance on others, to aggression that reflects despair, to aggression that may be a hopeful sign of new strength. Throughout the book, Jack shows the positive sides of aggression as women struggle with internal and external demons, reconnect with others, and create the courage to stand their ground. This work broadens our understanding of aggression as an interpersonal phenomenon rooted in societal expectations, and offers exciting new approaches for exploring the variations of this vexing human experience.
This book explores the origins, meaning, and forms of women's experience of the@p£×=qÿ¾Úð |

To the Ends of the Earth: Women’s Search for Education in Medici
$4.34
In this engagingly written book Thomas Bonner unveils the dramatic story of women's long struggle to become physicians. Focusing both on international comparisons and on the personal histories of many of the pioneers, their determination and dedication, their setbacks and successes, he shows how European and American women gradually broke through the wall of resistance to women in medicine. In pre-Civil War America, in Tsarist Russia, in Victorian England, special schools of medicine for women were widely established as early as 1850 as a kind of way-station on the road to medical coeducation. Only in Switzerland and France, at first, could women study medicine in classes with men. As a result, hundreds and then thousands of women from Russia, Eastern Europe, England, and the United States enrolled in Swiss or Parisian universities to gain the first-class education that was denied them at home. Coming almost literally from the ends of the earth, they formed the largest migration of professional women in history.
A clearly written and comprehensive historical account of the evolving national, legal, and educational structures bearing on women's medical education and licensing.A fresh examination of the different strands of [women's] long and intense struggle for medical training. An essential reference for anyone studying the historical, social, economic, and psychological currents that affected many countries' ability to make full use of the talent of half the potential candidates for a medical education. It is also a tribute to the women in many countries who persisted, against extraordinary odds, in pursuing a profession that they found irresistibly challenging and gratifying. To the Ends of the Earth is an absorbing chronicle of women's struggle to gain entrance to the medical schools of the industrializing nations of Europe, Imperial Russia and North America from the mid-nineteenth century up to the end of the first World War@\(õÂ?\ÿ¾Úð |

Destined for Equality: The Inevitable Rise of Women’s Status
$12.5
Men and women remain unequal in the United States, but in this provocative book, Robert Max Jackson demonstrates that gender inequality is irrevocably crumbling. Destined for Equality, the first integrated analysis of gender inequality's modern decline, tells the story of that progressive movement toward equality over the past two centuries in America, showing that women's status has risen consistently and continuously.

Jackson asserts that women's rising status has been due largely to the emergence of modern political and economic organizations, which have transformed institutional priorities concerning gender. Although individual politicians and businessmen generally believed women should remain in their traditional roles, Jackson shows that it was simply not in the interests of modern enterprise and government to foster inequality. The search for profits, votes, organizational rationality, and stability all favored a gender-neutral approach that improved women's status. The inherent gender impartiality of organizational interests won out over the prejudiced preferences of the men who ran them.

As economic power migrated into large-scale organizations inherently indifferent to gender distinctions, the patriarchal model lost its social and cultural sway, and women's continual efforts to rise in the world became steadily more successful. Total gender equality will eventually prevail; the only questions remaining are what it will look like, and how and when it will arrive.
|

Learning to Dance: Advancing Women’s Reproductive Health and Wel
$18.42
This book promotes understanding of how the fields of health and human rights can better work together, including both addressing human rights implications of reproductive health interventions and fostering rights-based policies and laws relating to sexuality and reproductive health. A decade after the groundbreaking Cairo Conference on Population and Development a serious gap remains between the reproductive health and human rights fields. Too often, despite using the same language, the two fields do not seem to share the same understanding or strategies. In order to better understand the links and synergies between reproductive health and human rights as well as the continuing gaps between the two fields, this book brings together twelve experts to compare how each field traditionally approaches a situation that presents both public health and human rights implications. Six case studies, illustrating a range of issues in sexual and reproductive health, are analyzed by both a public health expert and a human rights expert, and a separate essay synthesizes the convergences and divergences between the two approaches and points to ways forward.
|
